We sometimes, when picturing the 18th century, envision our ancestors hefting huge ceramic beersteins, or leather drinking jacks. Yes, there were plenty of these around, but by the 18th century, the majority of Americans had the means to attempt to copy the supper tables of the nobility and wealthy. This rising middle class demanded glassware, and it was happily supplied to them. While this glassware was certainly not as fine as that which graced the tables of the royal or the wealthy, it was certainly beautiful and delicate and displayed very fine craftsmanship.
